Just My Type

I knew immediately that I wanted to read Just My Type because I read Falon Ballard’s debut novel, Lease on Love, last year and it was incredible (that Thanksgiving dinner scene IYKYK)! And overall, I really enjoyed Just My Type, but I think I kept comparing it to Lease on Love (yes, I know that is my own fault).

I’m a sucker for the “second chance” romance trope, especially between high school sweethearts (my husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been together 12 years). I also loved the publishing setting and Ballard’s emphasis on friendships throughout the novel.

While I really liked this one, I was looking for something more. I’m not even sure what, exactly. I just felt no connection to the book or characters most of the time. Maybe it’s just me, but in reading Ballard’s two novels, many of the characters feel juvenile and immature at times. I think I’m just an “old soul” and 29 going on 89, so that’s probably a personal insight. I also wished there was more background on Lana’s and Seth’s relationship throughout the book – most of it was squeezed into the last quarter and felt somewhat rushed. The last 35 pages felt somewhat like emotional whiplash.

All that said, I still think this is a good rom com and a lot of readers will adore it. Ballard’s writing style is absolutely incredible, and I’m excited (read: impatiently waiting) to see what she writes next!

Thank you Putnam Books and NetGalley for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
